Celebrate Spring with Tulips at Botanica

Spring at Botanica is a time of renewal. Nothing embodies this season better than the breathtaking display of tulips that adorn the gardens. With around 68,000 tulip bulbs planted last fall, our gardens are erupting in a dazzling array of colors. They offer a truly mesmerizing experience for visitors. Whether you’re a devoted tulip enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, this year’s display promises to be one of the most spectacular yet.

A Diverse Collection of Tulips

Tulips come in many forms, and Botanica is proud to showcase 119 different varieties this year. Among them, 38 are completely new to our gardens, bringing a fresh palette of hues and textures to our spaces. The tulips have been carefully selected and arranged to create a harmonious blend of early, mid, and late bloomers, ensuring that the gardens remain vibrant throughout the spring season.

Each tulip variety belongs to a specific type based on its distinct characteristics. Here’s a glimpse of the diversity you can expect to see at Botanica this year:

  • Single Early & Single Late Tulips: These classic tulips feature elegant, cup-shaped blooms with a single layer of petals. While Single Early varieties bloom in early spring, their Single Late counterparts extend the season with their late-spring brilliance. Be sure to visit the Beverly Blue Teaching Garden to admire the ‘Pretty Princess’ tulip, a standout among this group.
  • Double Early & Double Late Tulips: Resembling peonies, these tulips boast lush, multi-layered petals. Their voluminous blooms add a touch of opulence to the gardens. One must-see variety in the Beverly Blue Teaching Garden is the ‘Blue Spectacle,’ a striking Double Late tulip.
  • Triumph Tulips: Known for their sturdy stems and weather-resistant nature, Triumph tulips bloom in mid-spring and make excellent cut flowers. The Koch Carousel Garden is home to the ‘Gavota’ variety, a deep red and gold beauty that is sure to turn heads.
  • Parrot Tulips: With their uniquely curled, feather-like petals, Parrot tulips bring an exotic charm to the gardens. The Koch Carousel Garden features the ‘Power Parrot’ tulip, a vibrant, eye-catching bloom that is not to be missed.
  • Darwin Hybrid Tulips: These grand tulips boast tall stems and large, showy blooms that can reach up to six inches in diameter. Visit the John Firsching Pinetum & Evergreen Collection to marvel at the ‘Banja Luka’ variety, an impressive specimen among our Darwin Hybrids.
  • Fringed Tulips: Distinguished by their delicately fringed petal edges, these tulips add an element of texture and refinement to the gardens. Look for ‘Crystal Star’ in the Margie Button Memorial Fountain and Garden to appreciate their unique beauty.
  • Lily Flowering Tulips: With tall stems and pointed petals that flare outward, these tulips bear a resemblance to lilies and bloom in late spring. The Martha Parriott Terrace Garden is home to ‘Whispering Dream,’ a graceful example of this type.
  • Bunch Flowering Tulips: Unlike traditional tulips that produce a single bloom per stem, these varieties offer clusters of three to five flowers, creating a fuller, more abundant display. Visit the Downing Children’s Garden to admire ‘Toronto,’ a charming Bunch Flowering tulip.
  • Rembrandt Tulips: These bicolored tulips feature stunning streaks or flames on their petals, reminiscent of the historic Tulip Mania varieties of the 17th century. Our one and only Rembrandt tulip selection, ‘Rembrandt Mixed,’ can be found in the John Firsching Pinetum & Evergreen Collection.
  • Viridiflora Tulips: Recognized for their green-striped petals due to the presence of chlorophyll, these tulips offer a truly distinctive look. The Schnitzler Juniper Collection showcases ‘Green ‘N Gold,’ our singular Viridiflora variety this season.
